I would like to start a book study and begin with Codependent No More by Melody Beattie. I was thinking a chapter a week starting in a week so everyone can have an opportunity to obtain the book.
I like that idea too. I'm gonna find that book this weekend.

I'll try and read the book aqain. It would work better for me if it wasn't written by the wife of an alcoholic. Maybe we can study a Bradshaw book after this.

Great Idea
Beatty was a sober alcoholic/addict in a 12 Step Program when she wrote this though, which mirrors many of our experiences

I ordered the book from alibris.com. They have great prices on used books.
I would like to learn more about this - I never thought I has issues with co-dependency but some of the things I've read on this site about people not living up to my expectations I see in myself. It's something I need to learn more about and find solutions for. Plus, self-awareness is always a good thing.
Thanks Linistea

Linistea, Thank you for taking the lead on this. Could you provide a quick summary on how this should/will work? Never been part of a book study before. Thanks.
I would like to join this book study, too. Just to introduce myself, I'm new to this site, and am 5 years sober and looking for a new way to work on my program. LinBaba kindly pointed me to this discussion group after I posted on the AA discussion page, and I am happy he did. I have had aspects of co-dependency all my life, and a therapist I had many years ago recommended that I join a CODA group. I tried, but didn't really work the program (that was 20 years ago). Now that I have a handle on my alcoholism, I guess it's time to re-explore co-dependency. I remember reading this book back 20 years ago (as well as the Bradshaw book). I'm energized to pull them out and re-read them both!
Welcome, NaninMinn. We are glad you are here and look forward to having you join the book study.
Mike - I am kind of flying by the seat of my pants here. Only been to live book study meetings.
I envisioned us each reading the appointed chapter per week on our own. I will then post an overview of the chapter - not the whole thing - and what it meant to me and hope that others will share their thoughts on it as well.
I have emailed Melody Beattie in regards to posting some of her material here and haven't heard back. I don't intend on posting large swaths of her material anyway, I like reading the book in my hands - highlighting - making notes in the margins - looking things up etc. I image she won't be too upset if we just reference certain sentences and we are promoting the purchase of her book(s). There are activities at the end of each chapter as well that we can each participate in.
If anyone has any feedback on how they would like to be handled differently, please feel free to speak (type) up!
Hope everyone's Monday was awesome. Mine sure was.

Linistea, Found this post and understand it a bit more. I ordered this book for my ereader and read the first chapter. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and others on it. Thank you for taking on this, I believe this is something that can benefit many of us.
Glad you are going to join us. I just did the introduction yesterday as I wanted to give folks who haven't purchased the book a little more time to do so - and get used to doing this myself. Slow, easy start. Ease ourselves into the habit and come out swinging next week.
Step study tonight (also going to do the intro for the same reasons).
